Every September, veterinary professionals and pet advocates around the world come together to shine a light on something that far too many cat owners miss entirely: pain. September is officially recognised as Pet Pain Awareness Month — a time dedicated to educating cat parents about the subtle, often invisible ways our feline companions suffer in silence.
Cats are masters of disguise. Thousands of years of evolution as both predator and prey have hard-wired them to conceal vulnerability. In the wild, showing weakness invites danger. In your living room, that same instinct means your cat may be experiencing significant discomfort — from inflammation, joint disease, digestive distress, or chronic illness — while appearing perfectly fine on the outside.
This is the first post in our Cat Pain Awareness Month blog series, and we are starting at the very root of so much feline suffering: inflammation. Understanding what inflammation is, how it becomes chronic, what it looks like from the outside, and — crucially — what you can do about it, is one of the most powerful things you can do for your cat's long-term health and quality of life.

When your cat's immune system detects a threat — a bacterial infection, physical injury, a toxin, or damaged tissue — it launches an inflammatory response to contain the damage, fight off invaders, and begin the healing process.
At the cellular level, this involves the release of chemical messengers called cytokines and prostaglandins, which signal blood vessels to dilate and become more permeable. White blood cells flood the area. The affected tissue becomes red, warm, swollen, and painful. These are the classic signs of acute inflammation, and they serve a vital purpose.
Think of acute inflammation as your cat's internal fire brigade. A cut on the paw, a respiratory infection, a bee sting — the inflammatory response rushes in, does its job, and then stands down once the threat is neutralised. The body returns to balance, and healing occurs.
The Two Faces of Inflammation
Inflammation exists on a spectrum:
• Acute inflammation: Short-term, purposeful, and self-limiting. It arises quickly, does its job, and resolves. Examples include wound healing, fighting off a cold, or recovering from surgery.
• Chronic inflammation: Long-term, low-grade, and persistent. The immune system remains in a state of constant activation even when there is no acute threat. This is where the real danger lies.
Chronic inflammation is sometimes called "the silent killer" in human medicine, and the same concept applies to our cats. It is quiet, insidious, and cumulative — doing damage over months and years before the consequences become visible.
3. When Acute Becomes Chronic: The Tipping Point
So what causes the body's fire brigade to forget to go home? Why does inflammation sometimes refuse to resolve?
There are several pathways through which acute inflammation transitions into a chronic state, and understanding them helps us see why so many cats — particularly middle-aged and senior cats — are living with ongoing inflammatory conditions.
Persistent Triggers
When the original cause of inflammation is never fully resolved, the immune system has no signal to stand down. Chronic infections (such as feline herpesvirus, FIV, or FeLV), ongoing exposure to allergens, dental disease, or parasites can all keep the inflammatory response perpetually activated. The body is constantly fighting, constantly inflamed, and constantly exhausted.
Gut Dysbiosis and the Microbiome
Emerging veterinary research has highlighted the profound role of the gut microbiome in regulating inflammation. In cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) — one of the most common chronic inflammatory conditions in felines — researchers have found significant disruptions in the balance of gut bacteria, a state known as dysbiosis.
Studies published in peer-reviewed veterinary journals have shown that dysbiosis in cats is characterized by decreased numbers of beneficial bacteria (such as Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium species) and increased numbers of pathogenic bacteria. This imbalance disrupts the gut's ability to regulate local immune responses, leading to persistent intestinal inflammation [1].
Obesity and Inflammaging
Excess body fat is not simply a passive storage depot — it is metabolically active tissue that produces pro-inflammatory cytokines. Overweight and obese cats are therefore in a state of chronic low-grade inflammation simply by virtue of carrying excess weight. Conversely, diets lacking in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and key micronutrients deprive the body of the tools it needs to resolve inflammation naturally. Over time, a nutritionally poor diet can tip the balance from acute to chronic inflammation.
Chronic Stress

Here is where cat ownership becomes both an art and a science. Because cats instinctively mask discomfort, the signs of inflammation are rarely dramatic. They are subtle, gradual, and easy to dismiss as "just getting older" or "being a bit grumpy lately." But these changes are your cat's only way of telling you something is wrong.
Veterinary organizations including the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and VCA Animal Hospitals emphasize that recognizing pain in cats requires knowing your individual cat's baseline behaviour — and noticing when it shifts [2].
Behavioral Signs
• Hiding more frequently or withdrawing from family interaction
• Decreased interest in play, exploration, or activities they previously enjoyed
• Increased irritability, aggression, or sensitivity to being touched
• Unusual vocalization — more frequent meowing, growling, or hissing

It is worth repeating: sometimes the most telling sign is not something new your cat is doing, but something they have stopped doing. A cat who no longer leaps to their favorite windowsill, who no longer greets you at the door, who no longer plays with their beloved toy — that cat may be telling you, in the only language available to them, that something hurts.

5. The Autoimmune Connection
Inflammation and the immune system are inseparable partners. In a healthy cat, the immune system is exquisitely calibrated — it knows the difference between "self" (the cat's own tissues) and "non-self" (pathogens, foreign substances). It attacks the latter and leaves the former alone.
In autoimmune disease, this calibration breaks down. The immune system begins to misidentify the body's own tissues as threats and launches an inflammatory attack against them. The result is a category of conditions that are, at their core, diseases of chronic, misdirected inflammation.
Autoimmune Conditions in Cats
According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, immune-mediated diseases are among the most common immune disorders seen in cats [4]. These include:
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): The immune system attacks the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, causing chronic inflammation, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. IBD is one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory conditions in cats.
• Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis: The immune system attacks joint tissues, causing painful, swollen joints. Unlike osteoarthritis (which is degenerative), immune-mediated arthritis is driven by active immune attack.
• Glomerulonephritis: Immune complexes become trapped in the kidney's filtering units, triggering inflammation that can progress to chronic kidney failure if untreated.
• Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): A rare but serious autoimmune condition in cats in which antibodies attack the cat's own tissues across multiple organ systems, including the skin, kidneys, joints, and nervous system.
• Feline Pemphigus: An autoimmune skin disease in which the immune system attacks proteins that hold skin cells together, resulting in blistering, crusting, and painful lesions.
• Anterior Uveitis: Immune-mediated inflammation of the eye, which can cause pain, light sensitivity, and vision changes.
Why Autoimmune Disease Is Difficult to Diagnose
One of the most challenging aspects of autoimmune conditions in cats is that their symptoms often overlap with many other diseases. A cat with IBD may look identical to a cat with intestinal lymphoma. A cat with immune-mediated arthritis may simply appear to be "slowing down with age." This is why regular veterinary check-ups, blood panels, and — when indicated — biopsies and specialized testing are so important.
The Inflammation–Autoimmunity Feedback Loop
It is important to understand that inflammation and autoimmunity are not simply cause and effect — they form a feedback loop. Chronic inflammation can trigger autoimmune responses by exposing normally hidden self-antigens to the immune system. Conversely, autoimmune activity generates more inflammation. If you have ever noticed that your cat's digestive issues flare up after a house move, or that their skin condition worsens when a new pet joins the household, you have witnessed the stress–inflammation connection in action. This is not a coincidence, it is biology.
The Cortisol–Inflammation Pathway
When a cat perceives a threat — whether physical or psychological — the body releases cortisol and adrenaline as part of the classic fight-or-flight response. In the short term, this is adaptive and protective. But when stress becomes chronic, cortisol remains persistently elevated, and this is where the damage begins [5].
Chronically elevated cortisol has several pro-inflammatory effects:
• It suppresses the immune system's regulatory functions, making it harder for the body to resolve inflammation once it starts.
• It disrupts the gut microbiome, altering the balance of bacteria in ways that promote intestinal inflammation.

Perhaps the most striking example of the stress–inflammation connection in cats is feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) — a painful inflammation of the bladder that has no identifiable infectious or structural cause. Research consistently identifies environmental stress as a primary trigger for FIC episodes [6]. Cats with FIC experience bladder inflammation, straining to urinate, blood in the urine, and significant pain — all driven, at least in part, by psychological stress.
This is why stress management is not a "nice to have" in feline medicine — it is a genuine therapeutic intervention. Reducing a cat's stress load can literally reduce their inflammation.
Pandora Syndrome: When Stress Becomes Systemic
Veterinary researchers have coined the term "Pandora Syndrome" to describe a pattern seen in some cats where chronic stress triggers a cascade of seemingly unrelated health problems — urinary issues, digestive upset, skin conditions, and behavioural changes — all stemming from the same underlying stress-driven inflammatory state [7]. The name is apt: once the box is opened, problems seem to multiply.
Common sources of chronic stress in cats include:
• Multi-cat households with insufficient resources (litter boxes, feeding stations, resting spots)
• Changes in household routine, new people, or new pets
• Lack of environmental enrichment, play, or mental stimulation
• Unpredictable schedules or loud, chaotic environments
• Outdoor threats visible through windows (neighbourhood cats, wildlife)

Addressing your cat's anxiety is therefore not just about their emotional wellbeing — it is a direct intervention in their inflammatory health. Environmental enrichment, predictable routines, safe hiding spaces, vertical territory, and daily interactive play are all evidence-based strategies for reducing feline stress and, by extension, inflammation.
7. How to Lower Inflammation: A Practical Guide
The good news is that chronic inflammation is not a one-way street. There are meaningful, evidence-informed steps you can take to reduce your cat's inflammatory burden and support their body's natural healing processes. These strategies work best in combination — think of them as a toolkit rather than a single solution.
7.1 Partner With Your Veterinarian
This is always the first and most important step. If you suspect your cat is experiencing chronic inflammation — whether through the signs described above or through a formal diagnosis — work with your veterinarian to identify the underlying cause. Treating the root cause is always more effective than managing symptoms alone.
Your vet may recommend:
• Blood panels and urinalysis to assess organ function and detect markers of inflammation
• Imaging (X-rays or ultrasound) to evaluate joints, organs, and the gastrointestinal tract
• Biopsy for definitive diagnosis of IBD, lymphoma, or skin conditions
• Prescription anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive medications where appropriate
• Dental assessment, as dental disease is a frequently overlooked source of chronic systemic inflammation
7.2 Optimise Body Weight
If your cat is overweight, weight management is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory interventions available. Even modest weight loss in overweight cats has been shown to reduce circulating inflammatory markers and improve mobility, energy levels, and quality of life. Work with your vet to establish a safe, gradual weight loss plan — crash dieting in cats can cause serious liver problems (hepatic lipidosis).
7.3 Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids — particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fish oil — are among the most well-researched natural anti-inflammatory agents in veterinary medicine. They work by competing with pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids in cellular membranes and by producing specialised pro-resolving mediators that actively help resolve inflammation.
Many veterinarians recommend omega-3 supplementation for cats with arthritis, IBD, skin conditions, and kidney disease. Always use a product formulated for cats and consult your vet for appropriate dosing, as too much fish oil can cause digestive upset or interfere with blood clotting.
7.4 Environmental Enrichment and Stress Reduction
As discussed in the previous section, reducing chronic stress is a direct anti-inflammatory strategy. Practical steps include:
• Providing multiple safe hiding spots and elevated resting areas
• Maintaining a consistent daily routine for feeding, play, and interaction
• Engaging in daily interactive play sessions that mimic hunting behaviour
• Using pheromone diffusers (such as Feliway) in multi-cat or high-stress households
• Ensuring adequate resources in multi-cat homes (one litter box per cat, plus one)
7.5 Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Gut Health
Given the central role of the gut microbiome in regulating inflammation, supporting gut health is one of the most targeted anti-inflammatory strategies available. Two ingredients in particular have emerged from the research as especially promising for cats.
Bacillus subtilis: The Spore-Forming Probiotic
Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming probiotic bacterium with a remarkable advantage over many conventional probiotics: its spores are highly resistant to heat, stomach acid, and bile, meaning viable bacteria reliably reach the intestines where they can colonise and exert their benefits. This stability also makes it well-suited for inclusion in pet foods and supplements without refrigeration.
A 2025 study published in Animals (Basel) investigated the effects of B. licheniformis and B. subtilis supplementation in cats over 35 days. The results were compelling: both probiotics improved fecal scores, increased levels of immunoglobulins IgA and IgM (key markers of immune function), raised total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and — critically — reduced levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Microbiome sequencing confirmed beneficial shifts in gut bacterial composition, including increased Faecalibacterium — one of the beneficial species depleted in cats with IBD [10].
Once in the gut, B. subtilis spores germinate and become metabolically active, producing enzymes that aid digestion, upregulating tight junction proteins that reinforce the gut barrier (reducing "leaky gut"), and blunting inflammatory responses by modulating cytokine production and limiting NF-κB signaling — a key inflammatory pathway [11].
For cats with IBD, food sensitivities, chronic diarrhea, or those recovering from antibiotic treatment, B. subtilis represents a well-tolerated, evidence-supported probiotic option. Always choose a veterinary-formulated product and consult your vet before starting supplementation.
Larch Arabinogalactan: The Prebiotic That Feeds the Right Bacteria
While probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria, prebiotics feed and sustain them. Larch arabinogalactan (LA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide fiber derived from the wood of the larch tree (Larix species). It is one of the most researched prebiotic fibers in both human and veterinary nutrition, and its benefits extend well beyond simple fiber supplementation.
A study published in The Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that oral administration of arabinogalactan in dogs significantly affected immune status and fecal microbial populations — increasing beneficial bacteria and supporting immune function [12]. These findings are directly relevant to cats, as the gut–immune axis operates similarly across companion animal species.
More recently, a 2026 study presented at the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) Forum evaluated a multi fermentable fiber blend containing larch arabinogalactan in 50 cats and 75 dogs over 30 days. Results showed improved stool consistency, positive modulation of the gut microbial community — including decreases in Escherichia coli and Streptococcus and increases in beneficial Peptacetobacter hiranonis — and 40% of cat owners reported fewer hairballs [13].
Larch arabinogalactan works through several mechanisms that are particularly relevant to inflammation:
• It acts as a fermentable substrate for beneficial gut bacteria, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, which have direct anti-inflammatory effects on the gut lining.
• It has been shown to stimulate natural killer (NK) cell activity and support innate immune function — helping the immune system respond appropriately without tipping into chronic over-activation.
• It supports a diverse, resilient gut microbiome — the foundation of a well-regulated inflammatory response.
• Its slow, medium, and fast fermenting fractions ensure that beneficial effects are distributed throughout the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract, not just the upper GI.
Larch arabinogalactan is generally well tolerated and can be found in veterinary-formulated fibre supplements and some premium pet foods. As with all supplements, introduce gradually and consult your veterinarian, particularly if your cat has an existing digestive condition.
7.6 Antioxidant Support
Chronic inflammation generates oxidative stress — a damaging imbalance between free radicals and the body's antioxidant defenses. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals and reduce the cellular damage associated with chronic inflammation. Key antioxidants for cats include vitamin E, selenium, and polyphenols found in certain whole food ingredients.
A diet rich in high-quality, minimally processed whole food ingredients naturally provides a broader spectrum of antioxidants than ultra-processed commercial foods.
7.7 Regular Veterinary Monitoring
For cats with known chronic inflammatory conditions, regular monitoring is essential. This may include periodic blood panels to track inflammatory markers, kidney and liver function, and the effects of any medications. Catching changes early allows for timely adjustments to the management plan before problems escalate.
8. The Kidney Connection: Chronic Kidney Disease and Inflammation
Of all the conditions linked to chronic inflammation in cats, chronic kidney disease (CKD) deserves special attention — not only because it is one of the most common serious illnesses in cats, but because the relationship between CKD and inflammation is a two-way street that can accelerate both conditions simultaneously.
CKD affects an estimated 30–40% of cats over the age of ten, making it one of the leading causes of illness and death in senior and geriatric felines. For many years, CKD was understood primarily as a structural and functional problem — damaged nephrons (the kidney's filtering units) that could no longer do their job. But emerging research has revealed that inflammation is not merely a consequence of CKD: it is also a driver of it.
What the Research Shows
A peer-reviewed prospective study published in Animals (Basel) in 2023 measured inflammatory markers — specifically serum amyloid A (SAA) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) — in 32 cats with CKD at IRIS stages 2 through 4, compared to ten healthy control cats. The results were striking: mean ESR and SAA concentrations were statistically significantly higher in cats with CKD across all stages measured [8]. Furthermore, SAA — a sensitive acute-phase protein that rises in response to systemic inflammation — was elevated even at IRIS Stage 2, the earliest stage measured. This tells us that inflammation is present from the very beginning of clinically detectable kidney disease, not just in advanced stages.
Separately, research into oxidative stress in cats with CKD has found significant evidence of renal oxidative damage — a form of cellular injury driven by an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidant defenses that is closely intertwined with inflammatory processes. Oxidative stress both triggers and is amplified by inflammation, creating a damaging cycle within kidney tissue.
The Bidirectional Relationship: How CKD and Inflammation Feed Each Other
Understanding the CKD–inflammation relationship requires appreciating that causality runs in both directions:
• Inflammation drives CKD progression: Pro-inflammatory cytokines damage the delicate structures of the kidney's filtering units (glomeruli and tubules), accelerating the loss of functional nephrons. Immune complex deposition — as seen in glomerulonephritis — is a direct example of inflammation causing kidney damage.
• CKD drives inflammation: As kidney function declines, the body's ability to clear inflammatory mediators and waste products diminishes. Uraemic toxins — the metabolic waste products that accumulate when kidneys cannot filter effectively — are themselves pro-inflammatory, stimulating immune activation and perpetuating systemic inflammation.
• Gut dysbiosis amplifies both: CKD disrupts the gut microbiome, and gut dysbiosis in turn increases intestinal permeability — allowing bacterial toxins to enter the bloodstream and fuel systemic inflammation. This gut–kidney axis is an active area of veterinary research and helps explain why digestive health is so important in CKD management.
• Hypertension connects the two: High blood pressure — common in cats with CKD — causes mechanical stress on kidney blood vessels, triggering local inflammation and further nephron loss. Inflammation, in turn, can contribute to hypertension by affecting vascular tone and function.

Recognizing CKD Early: Signs to Watch For
Because CKD is progressive and irreversible — but manageable when caught early — knowing the early warning signs is critical. Many of these overlap with the general signs of chronic inflammation discussed earlier in this post:
• Increased thirst and more frequent urination (the kidneys lose their ability to concentrate urine)
• Unexplained weight loss and muscle wasting, particularly along the spine
• Reduced appetite or complete loss of interest in food
• Lethargy, reduced activity, and increased sleeping
• Vomiting, particularly in the morning or when the stomach is empty
• Bad breath with a distinctive ammonia-like or "uraemic" odour
• A dull, unkempt coat and reduced grooming
Crucially, many cats with early-stage CKD show no obvious symptoms at all. This is why annual blood panels — including SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine), a sensitive early marker of kidney function decline — are so important for cats over seven years of age. SDMA can detect kidney function loss before creatinine levels rise, giving you and your veterinarian a valuable head start.
How to Protect Your Cat's Kidneys: Prevention and Management
While CKD cannot be cured, its progression can be meaningfully slowed — and the inflammatory component can be actively managed. Here is what the evidence supports:
Hydration above all else: Cats with CKD cannot concentrate their urine effectively, making adequate water intake essential. Wet food — which contains 70–80% moisture compared to approximately 10% in dry kibble — is far superior for kidney health. Encouraging water intake through cat fountains, multiple water stations, and wet food as the dietary foundation is one of the most impactful things you can do for your cat's kidneys at any age.
Phosphorus restriction: High blood phosphorus levels directly accelerate kidney damage and are strongly linked to faster CKD progression and poorer outcomes. Prescription renal diets are formulated to restrict phosphorus to below 0.3–0.5% on a dry matter basis. For cats already diagnosed with CKD, dietary phosphorus restriction is considered the single most evidence-backed nutritional intervention available [9].
Omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA from fish oil have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects specifically within kidney tissue, helping to reduce the local inflammatory environment that drives nephron loss. Many prescription renal diets include omega-3 supplementation; additional fish oil may be recommended by your veterinarian.
Antioxidant support: Given the role of oxidative stress in CKD, antioxidant-rich diets and targeted supplementation (such as vitamin E) may help reduce renal oxidative damage. This is an area of active research in feline nephrology.
Blood pressure management: Hypertension is both a cause and consequence of CKD-related inflammation. Regular blood pressure monitoring and, where necessary, antihypertensive medication prescribed by your veterinarian can significantly slow kidney damage.
Gut health support: Supporting the gut microbiome through B. subtilis probiotics and prebiotic fibers such as larch arabinogalactan may help reduce the gut-derived inflammatory load that worsens CKD. Some prescription renal diets now incorporate prebiotic fibers specifically to support the gut–kidney axis.
Early detection through regular screening: Annual blood panels including SDMA for cats over seven, and every six months for cats over ten, give you the best chance of catching CKD at a stage where intervention is most effective. The earlier the diagnosis, the more tools are available to slow progression and manage inflammation.
If your cat has already been diagnosed with CKD, the inflammation–kidney connection is a reason for hope as much as concern. It means that the anti-inflammatory strategies discussed throughout this post — diet, omega-3s, stress reduction, gut health, antioxidant support — are not just general wellness measures. They are directly relevant to protecting your cat's remaining kidney function and improving their quality of life.
9. Breed Spotlight: When Genetics Load the Inflammatory Gun
While chronic inflammation can affect any cat regardless of breed or background, certain purebred cats carry genetic predispositions that make them significantly more vulnerable to inflammatory and immune-mediated conditions. If you share your home with one of these breeds, understanding their specific risks is an essential part of proactive care.
It is important to note that genetics do not determine destiny. A predisposition is not a diagnosis. With attentive ownership, regular veterinary monitoring, and the anti-inflammatory lifestyle strategies outlined in this post, many breed-specific inflammatory conditions can be managed effectively — and in some cases, their onset delayed or their severity reduced.
Scottish Fold: Born with Inflammation Built In
The Scottish Fold's iconic folded ears are caused by a dominant genetic mutation affecting cartilage development throughout the entire skeleton — not just the ears. This mutation, known as osteochondrodysplasia, causes abnormal bone and cartilage formation that leads to severe, progressive, and painful joint inflammation [14].
Every Scottish Fold cat — regardless of whether they show obvious symptoms — carries this mutation and is at risk. The condition causes early-onset osteoarthritis, fusion of the tail, ankles, and knee joints, and chronic pain that can be difficult to detect because cats mask discomfort so effectively. Signs include:
• Shortened, thickened lower limbs and a stiff, inflexible tail
• Reluctance to move, jump, or play
• Abnormal posture and gait — walking stiffly or sitting in unusual positions
• Sensitivity to touch around the joints, tail, and lower limbs
• Hiding, reduced appetite, and other signs of chronic pain
International Cat Care (iCatCare) and the British Veterinary Association (BVA) have both taken the position that breeding Scottish Fold cats is ethically problematic precisely because the mutation that creates their appearance also guarantees a degree of painful inflammatory joint disease. If you have a Scottish Fold, proactive pain management, anti-inflammatory nutritional support, and regular veterinary monitoring are not optional — they are essential.
Siamese: Inflammation of the Airways and Beyond
Siamese cats have a significantly elevated risk of feline asthma and allergic bronchitis — at 3 to 5 times the rate of the general cat population [15]. Feline asthma is fundamentally an inflammatory condition: the airways become chronically inflamed and hypersensitive, leading to bronchoconstriction, coughing, wheezing, and in severe cases, respiratory distress.
Siamese cats are also predisposed to systemic amyloidosis — a condition in which an abnormal protein called amyloid (produced as part of the inflammatory response) accumulates in organs, particularly the liver and kidneys, causing progressive organ damage. This is a direct example of chronic inflammation causing structural organ disease over time.
Additionally, Siamese cats show elevated rates of feline hyperesthesia syndrome — a poorly understood neurological condition associated with stress and inflammation — and are over-represented in cases of IBD. For Siamese owners, minimizing aerosolized irritants (candles, air fresheners, dusty litter, cigarette smoke), managing stress carefully, and supporting gut and immune health are particularly important.
Persian and Exotic Shorthair: Kidney Disease and Skin Inflammation
Persian and Exotic Shorthair cats carry a high prevalence of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) — a genetic condition in which fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys from birth, gradually replacing functional kidney tissue and leading to chronic kidney failure. As we explored in the previous section, CKD and inflammation are deeply intertwined, making Persians particularly vulnerable to the compounding effects of both.
Persians are also prone to primary seborrhea — a skin condition characterised by flaky or greasy skin and coat — and facial skin fold dermatitis, where the deep facial folds trap moisture and debris, creating a chronically inflamed, infection-prone environment. Their flat faces (brachycephalic conformation) can also contribute to chronic upper respiratory inflammation.
Maine Coon: Heart Disease and Joint Vulnerability
Maine Coons are genetically predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — a thickening of the heart muscle that is the most common heart disease in cats. While HCM is primarily a structural cardiac condition, inflammation plays a role in its progression and in the complications it causes, including blood clot formation and congestive heart failure.
Maine Coons are also among the larger cat breeds, making them more susceptible to hip dysplasia and joint stress as they age. Excess weight in a Maine Coon — already a large-framed cat — can significantly amplify inflammatory joint disease. Weight management and omega-3 supplementation are particularly important for this breed.
Abyssinian and Somali: Immune-Mediated Vulnerability
Abyssinian and Somali cats show elevated rates of pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency — a genetic condition affecting red blood cells that leads to haemolytic anaemia. The chronic destruction of red blood cells triggers ongoing immune activation and inflammatory responses as the body attempts to manage the resulting cellular debris.
Both breeds are also over-represented in cases of progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and have been noted in veterinary literature as having a higher incidence of IBD and other immune-mediated conditions. Their immune systems appear to be more reactive, making gut health support, stress management, and anti-inflammatory nutrition especially relevant.
A Note on Mixed-Breed Cats
It would be a mistake to conclude from this section that mixed-breed or domestic shorthair cats are immune to inflammatory conditions. They are not. The conditions described throughout this post — IBD, arthritis, CKD, FIC, autoimmune disease — affect cats of all backgrounds. The difference is that purebred cats may face a higher baseline risk due to their more limited genetic diversity and the specific mutations selected for in their breeding.
Regardless of your cat's breed or background, the principles of anti-inflammatory care outlined in this post apply universally. Every cat benefits from a low-stress environment, a high-quality diet, regular veterinary monitoring, and attentive, informed ownership.
10. The Role of Food: Nourishing Your Cat Back to Comfort
Of all the tools available to support a cat with chronic inflammation, food may be the most underestimated — and the most accessible. What your cat eats every single day either feeds the fire of inflammation or helps to quench it. There is no neutral ground.
What Inflammatory Diets Look Like
Many commercial cat foods — particularly dry kibble — are formulated with ingredients that can promote inflammation over time:
• High carbohydrate content: Cats are obligate carnivores with limited ability to metabolize carbohydrates. Excess carbohydrates can contribute to blood sugar dysregulation, obesity, and inflammation.
• Low-quality protein sources: Rendered by-products and heavily processed proteins are less bioavailable and may trigger immune responses in sensitive cats.
• Artificial additives and preservatives: Certain synthetic additives have been associated with adverse reactions and may contribute to gut inflammation in susceptible individuals.
• Imbalanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio: Most commercial foods are disproportionately high in omega-6 fatty acids (which are pro-inflammatory) relative to omega-3s (which are anti-inflammatory).
What Anti-Inflammatory Diets Look Like
An anti-inflammatory diet for cats prioritizes:
• High-quality animal protein as the primary ingredient — ideally from named, whole meat sources
• Appropriate moisture content — wet food or fresh food supports kidney health and reduces urinary tract inflammation
• Omega-3 rich ingredients such as oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) or added fish oil
• Whole food ingredients that provide natural antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
• Minimal processing — the closer to whole food, the better the nutritional integrity
• Gut-supportive ingredients including prebiotic fibers (such as larch arabinogalactan) and probiotic strains (such as Bacillus subtilis) where appropriate
A Note on Home Cooking for Cats
For cat parents who want to take a more hands-on approach to their cat's nutrition, home cooking can be a wonderful way to ensure ingredient quality, freshness, and transparency. However, it is absolutely essential that home-cooked diets for cats are nutritionally complete and balanced. Cats have very specific nutritional requirements — including taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and niacin — that must be met through diet, as they cannot synthesize adequate amounts themselves.
An improperly balanced home-cooked diet can cause serious nutritional deficiencies over time, even if it is made with the best intentions and the highest-quality ingredients. This is why having a reliable, veterinarian-informed resource is so important.
